Today I present to you my Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter review. In this review, I will tell you why I think I found the holy grail of cat litter. I have used this stuff since January of 2016 and have never looked back. After trying a million different cat litters, I must admit this is the winner.
What Makes Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter So Special?
- There is almost no dust
How many times have you cleaned a litter box and gotten a face full of nasty cat business dust? If you’re like me, too many times.
Fortunately, Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter has almost no dust at all, even when you are actively scooping out kitty buried treasure. 99.9% dust-free.
- It completely covers the smell
I think the smell-preventing effect of this litter amazes me the most. This is an unscented cat litter, so it doesn’t mask the smells. It absorbs them and smothers them completely.
The only caveat, and this goes for any cat litter, is if your cat lays a fresh one right on the top of the litter and doesn’t bury it at all. Then you might catch a whiff. Fortunately, my cats excel at burying things.
- The clumps are hard and stay together
One of the most frustrating things about scooping the litter box is when the litter doesn’t clump together and just falls apart into mush between the slats on the scooper. Then the rest of the relatively clean litter is no longer clean and is contaminated.
Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter doesn’t do that. This stuff absorbs all the liquids and forms large, manageable clumps that can easily be picked up and removed.
Sometimes the wet clumps can mold to the side of the litter box and be tricky to remove. With a little practice, getting these pieces that have molded to the shape of the box without breaking the clump into pieces is pretty easy.
- Unscented and all-natural
My favorite part about Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter is that there are no harmful additives like perfumes or synthetic chemicals. Somehow they’ve managed to make a cat litter unscented that is able to absorb all the scents deposited in it.
I am such a nut about my cats’ health that I make sure they do not consume any toxins so long as I can help it. This goes for their drinking water too. In fact, I use a countertop water distiller to purify their drinking water to 0 ppm TDS (parts per million total dissolves solids), a.k.a., as pure as it gets. You can check out my Megahome Countertop Water Distiller Review here.
- One bag lasts a long time
Call me a cheapskate, but I can stretch a bag of this stuff for a long time. I’m talking weeks. Granted, I have four litter boxes for two small cats. All I really do is every few days I scoop out the clumps and add a little fresh litter from the bag. Then, every few weeks I completely dump out all the cat litter, hose out the litter box and refill it with all new cat litter.
- Cheap and ships free from Amazon
Lucky for me I have Amazon Prime with free shipping, so I can get the 40 lb bag shipped to me for under $20. I feel bad for the delivery drivers that haul my heavy cat litter filled packages to my door, but that’s what they get paid the big bucks for, right?
Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter Ingredients
The only ingredient is Natural Clay.
Is Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter Safe?
Yes, Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter is extremely safe. Since the only ingredient is Natural Clay and the litter is 99.9% dust-free, you can rest assured that your cat isn’t going to be inhaling toxic fumes or eating poison. Also, my cats have never shown any interest in eating the clay, and even if they did, I wouldn’t be too worried about it.
The reason I was attracted to this cat litter in the first place is because of its safety profile. My cats mean the world to me, so safety is my number one priority in picking a cat litter.
“Hands down the best pet related purchase I have ever made. For the first time in 10 years my house doesn’t smell like cat poop.
Update: still love, but beware if your cat’s paw is wet the litter can form what I can only describe as concrete on their paw. You can imagine the fun we had soaking, chiseling, and cutting it off her hair for days.”

“My cat Sasha has been using this litter exclusively for about a year and a half now and I have no plans to ever use another litter. It’s my first time living on my own with a pet, and I was concerned that my small apartment would smell like a litter box (as many do), and that I’d have to constantly move her box in and out of the shower or the patio to avoid a mess. She did not have any problems adjusting to this from her old litter, which was different in every way.
I use this in combination with my Litter Genie in the 1/2 bathroom which is right at my front door, and you wouldn’t even know there was a litter box when you walked in. It’s so clean that I don’t even remove it when I have guests using that bathroom. It’s also unscented, which is great and I’m sure is much better for a cat who is constantly cleaning her toes. The grains are very large so I only need to use one mat outside the box and the litter never gets tracked out of the bathroom. She still kicks it around sometimes, though!”

“I know this stuff LOOKS like a cheap off-brand from the packaging, but long years of living my life as a miserable, lonely cat person with no romantic prospects has shown me that this stuff is amazing. It has the least dust of any litter I’ve used, it clumps like concrete, the litter pan remains fresher longer because when you scoop it you are getting more of the actual waste removed from the pan, none of the clumps has crumbled away to mix with the rest of the remaining litter, the clumps remain intact. Be advised, however, the 40 pound bag of this stuff weighs at least 63 pounds more than the 40 pound bag of Tidy Cat. It is the heaviest substance known to man.”

“I’ve been using this litter for quite sometime and have loved it but just recently noticed my cats tracking up my hardwood floors. I completely emptied all litter boxes and disinfected and filled with fresh litter to only find the tracking has not subsided. Horrible disappointment and not sure why the formula would change. I will be in search of another litter.”

How Much Does It Cost?
The 40 lb bag that I usually buy goes for $18-20 depending on when you buy it. The 18 lb bag sells for between $11-15.
Obviously, the 40 lb bag is a much better deal.
Where Is It Sold?
Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter is sold on Amazon. You might be able to find it locally as well.
My Overall Rating and Conclusion
After trying out a bunch of different types of cat litter, I can confidently say that I will never go back to using anything else other than Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter. It’s the best cat litter I’ve found.
Also, Dr. Elsey’s seems like a great company. They’ve donated over 10 million dollars to nonprofit organizations like shelters and rescues. Check out their story here.
Due to the ease of its use, its effectiveness in absorbing smells, its cheap price, how long the bags last, and most importantly, how safe and non-toxic it is, I give Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Cat Litter a 9.6/10.
